In May 1881, Jack Rickerson purchased a piano from a Louisville firm for $150 with payments to be made over time. His daughter Olivia Pearl was approaching her tenth birthday, and it is likely that it was bought for her. It was a Chickering & Sons piano, made in Boston. This mortgage made and entered into this 10th day of May 1881 between J. R. [sic] Rickerson of the town of Shepherdsville in the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky, party of the first part, and David P. Faulds of the City of Louisville in the County of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, party of the second part.
Witnesseth that whereas the said party of the first part has this day bought of the said party of the second part one piano forte, made by Chickering & Sons, Boston, which the said party of the first part has this day received in good order and condition for the sum of $150 which the said party of the first part agrees to pay to the said party of the second part at the store of D. P. Faulds or his assigns as follows, to wit.
