Extra Curricular Activities

The idea of extra curricular activities is not new. It is as old as our school system, but in recent years much attention is being given to such a program. Extra curricular activities are classified as those activities of the school which are organized but do not come under the regular curricular activities. The well organized extra curricular activity program in a modern high school is a "great humanistic laboratory" where youth tries, tests, and develops a standard of life and a culture that youth craves.

The point-of-view of the old school was very narrow, and the interest was centered in the curriculum rather than the student. The old theory of education is that knowledge constitutes education, and under such a theory the entire aim is to develop the intellect to its highest power, regardless of the social or even physical needs of the individual. In recent years the viewpoint has changed with the student as the center of the educational universe. The aims of education have changed, and modern education attempts to prepare youth for citizenship in a democracy. The new type of training puts the emphasis on the social aspect of education. An extra curricular activity program lends itself to the new philosophy of education, and such a program functions in developing the citizen because of the great opportunities in the practice of desired ideals.
