In 1825, Henry F. Kalfus, Shepherdsville Tax Collector, sold part of Nathan Harris' town lots to pay for his unpaid taxes, and Thomas Joyce was the purchaser of a five foot stretch across the two lots, a stretch that adjoined his own lots. Then, on 7 Aug 1826, Joyce returned the five foot stretch back to Harris for the purchase price, as shown below.

This indenture made and entered into this 17th day of July in the year of our Lord 1825 between Henry F. Kalfus, collector of the town tax for the town of Shepherdsville of the one part and Thomas Joyce, both of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky.
Witnesseth that whereas agreeably to an act of the general assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky approved February 19th 1808 concerning the town of Shepherdsville the trustees appointed Henry F. Kalfus collector of the town tax for the said town for the year 1825 and whereas the said Henry F. Kalfus in pursuance of the said appointment and agreeably to said act did regularly advertise according to law one lot owned by Nathan Harris, being part of lots No. 39 and 40 in the new plane of said town for fale for the purpose of raising the town tax due thereon, and having advertised the aforesaid lots at the courthouse door in Shepherdsville and other public places in said town between ten and twenty days before the day appointed for the sale of the same, did on the aforesaid 20th day of August 1825 offer the said lot (or parts of lots No. 39 & 40) or so much thereof for sale in market event, and the said tax not being paid which the trustees of said town by an order had directed should be collected on said lots as town tax. The said Kalfus, collector as aforesaid sold the same and the said Thomas Joyce became the purchaser of five feet in front of said lot 40 and to run back across said lot 40 and 39 being five feet off of said lotts adjoining Joyce's lot on which Joyce's house is built for the sum of $1.27 1/2, he being the highest bidder therefore which five feet of said lots is sold as the property of Nathan Harris.
Now for and in consideration of the premises the power vested in me by the appointment aforesaid paid by the said Joyce to me I do hereby bargain, sell, alien, release, convey and confirm unto the said Thomas Joyce five feet front off of lots No. 39 and 40 being five feet front of lot No. 40 and to run back to the back of lot No. 39 and all the appurtenances thereto belonging.
To have and to hold the same to him the said Thomas Joyce, his heirs and assigns forever, hereby warranting and defending the said five feet off of said lots No. 39 and 40 against the claim of the said Nathan Harris, his heirs and assigns and all other persons so far as the power vested in me by the appointment as collector enables me so to do and no further. In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first written. (signed) H. F. Kalfus

August 7th 1826. I do hereby relinquish to Nathan Harris the five feet of a lot in the town of Shepherdsville which I purchased off of said Harris' lot for the town tax. I hereby reconvey the same to Harris for the same consideration that I gave for the same, being the sum of one dollar and thirty seven and a half cents, and do hereby warrant and defend all the right, title and claim &c with which I became invested under said purchase to the said five feet unto the said Nathan Harris &c forever.
