In May 1863, Casper Herps purchased 25 acres of land from William P. Johnson that was located on the south side of Salt River in the Cedar Creek watershed. According to the deed the tract adjoined land owned by George W. Weller, John Whitaker and Thomas Crave.

This indenture made and entered into this 14th day of May 1863 between William P Johnson of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky, party of the first part, and Casper Herps of the county and state aforesaid, party of the second part. Witness that the party of the first part, and in consideration of the sum of $30 in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath granted, bargained, sold, and by these presents, do grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, a certain tract of land situate lying in the county of Bullitt and state aforesaid on the head waters of Cedar Creek and bounded as follows.
Beginning at a stake 1/2 pole northwardly from a beech and gum, corner to George W. Weller's entry of 33 acres in Whitaker's original line of his 460 acres survey; thence with Whitaker's line S 80° W 186 poles to a stake at the intersection of Thomas Crave's line of his 2415 acre survey; thence with Crave's line N 56° E 57 poles to a large chestnut oak, Crave's corner; thence with another of Crave's lines S 80° E 50 poles to a stake in said line, being 1 1/3 poles east from a white oak marked X; thence N 18° E 38 poles to the beginning containing 25 acres.
To have, and hold the land here in conveyed with the appurtenances onto the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns forever. And the said party of the first part further agrees that he will warrant and defend the title of the above describe tract of land against himself and his heirs, but not against the claim, or claims of any other person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof the said William P. Johnson, together with Mary his wife, who hereby relinquishes all her right of dower in and to the land conveyed in this deed, hath hereunto set their hands and seal the day and date above written.
