In 1843, a group of men, including Abraham Chappell, William F. Chappell, John W. Goheen, William Stibbins, James Arnold and Richard Skinner, purchased a half share (1000 acres) of Robert Sanford's 2000 acre patent from Nathaniel Pope who was living in Illinois at the time. We have not yet determined how Pope obtained this land.

This indenture made this 22nd day of April A.D. 1843 between Nathaniel Pope and Lucretia his wife of the County of Randolph and State of Illinois of the first part, and Abraham Chappell, William F. Chappell, John W. Goheen, William Stibbins, James Arnold and Richard Skinner of Bullitt County and State of Kentucky of the second part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of $1000 to them in hand paid by the party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said Nathaniel Pope and Lucetia Pope have bargained and sold, and by these presents do bargain, sell, release and quit claim unto the party of the second part the undivided half of a certain tract of land lying in Bullitt County and State of Kentucky on the waters of Salt River, and known as Robert Sandford's survey of 2000 acres.
To have and to hold the said undivided moiety of said survey of 2000 acres of land to the party of the second part, their heirs and assigns forever. And the said Nathaniel Pope for himself, his heirs, covenants with the said Abraham Chappell, William F. Chappell, John W. Goheen, William Stibbins, James Arnold and Richard Skinner, their heirs and assigns that he will warrant and defend the aforesaid demised premises against the lawful claim or claims of all and every person claiming under him and in no other manner whatever.
