J. I. Rickerson to R. J. Meyler & Others - A Mortgage

In January 1873, Jack Rickerson was indebted to several men and R. J. Meyler and others were his security. This mortgage was to ensure that those standing his security would not suffer loss. Side notes on the written mortgage show that the debts were paid.

This mortgage made this 8th day of January 1873 by J. I. Rickerson of the first part and R. J. Meyler, W. Carpenter and S. A. McKay of the second part. Witnesseth that the first party stands in debt to W. T. Monroe in the sum of $336.00 and S. A. McKay and R. J. Meyler is my security and stands indebted to J. O'Brien in the sum of $200 and interest, and W. Carpenter & R. J. Meyler are my security. Now in order to secure said second parties against loss as my security, I hereby mortgage, put in pledge and sell and convey to the second parties or to either of them that pay said debts for me the following property, to wit: a blacksmith shop and lot where McGinnis works in Shepherdsville, one log house, work shop adjoining the blacksmith shop. This mortgage of above estate subject to life estate of my father John Rickerson. Also mortgage about ten acres of land lying on the pike road near Shepherdsville or so much as I own thereof. Also the tract of land and appurtenances in or near Shepherdsville bought by me of W. Phelps where my brick yard is. But this mortgage is to be void of the second parties are held harmless from the said securityship, otherwise it shall remain in full force and virtue. (signed) J. I. Rickerson
