Shepherdsville 1917 Train Wreck Victims With Life Insurance

In February 1918, The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company published the following article in their in-house publication, The Pelican [Vol. 16, No. 7], for the benefit of their agents.

L. & N. Railroad Wreck

On December 20th last there was a disastrous wreck which caused the death and injury of a number of passengers on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. A fast passenger train plowed through a local, demolishing the cars, which were filled with Christmas shoppers returning from Louisville to points along the road. The wreck occurred at Shepherdsville, Ky. A number of Mutual Benefit policyholders were on the train and several of them lost their lives, including the following whose claims were among those paid by the Company last month.

Mr. Benjamin Talbott, insured under Mutual Benefit policies Nos. 200,597, issued in 1894, and 707,730, issued in 1915, for the benefit of his wife. Both policies were on the Ordinary Life plan, issued respectively at ages 34 and 55.

Mr. Joshua B. Bowles, a farmer, insured under policy No. 203,384, on the Ten-Payment Life plan, issued at age 27, in 1891.

Mr. Redford C. Cherry, a lawyer, insured under policy No. 542,794, on the Fifteen-Payment Life plan, issued at age 39, in 1910.

Mr. John T. Phillips, insured under policy No. 612,191, issued in 1912, at which time he was City Marshall of Bardstown, Ky. The policy was on the Ordinary Life plan, issued at age 50, for the benefit of his wife who was also killed in the wreck. Proceeds were paid to the joint order of Executors of both the estates.

Mr. Eugene A. Bertello, Minister of the Church of the Holy Redeemer at Chapeze, Ky., insured under policies Nos. 808,804-5-6, issued in June, 1917. The policies were on the Ordinary Life Accelerative Endowment plan, the insured being 32 years of age.
