November 14, 2014 (Volume 10, Number 10)

Dear Friends,

I would like to first take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have officially taken the position of Director as of November 1, 2014. David Strange is one hard act to follow. David has been with the museum since its inception and, as most of you know, plans to stay on with us as a volunteer. For the moment though, David has said he is quite content to be able to relax on those cold Monday mornings now.

I know I have some big shoes to fill and am still learning the ropes. I hope you will bear with me as I become more acquainted with the Museum, its wonderful volunteers, and the rich history of Bullitt County. I am really excited about our future and am grateful to have been accepted for the position. I have had the pleasure of working for the past several weeks with many of our volunteers. I look forward to meeting those volunteers whom I have not yet had the chance to meet personally. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Now, on to the news…

Upcoming Holidays:

The Museum will be closed Nov 27 and 28 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

At this time, we expect to be closed on Dec 25 and 26 for Christmas. We haven't been "officially" notified yet, so if anything changes, I will let you know.

The Bullitt County Genealogical Society meeting is tomorrow, Saturday, November 15, at 11 am at the Ridgeway Library.

Activity & Museum News:

-As many of you know, this past week we had some unexpected changes made to the revolving display area in the room to the right of the front doors as you enter. Tuesday morning, when Beverly Owen opened the room, she discovered a large amount of plaster had fallen from the ceiling into the display area. As Bob Cline said yesterday, we may indeed have had a visit from the Lady in Lace. Maybe David's Halloween story inspired the famous courthouse ghost to make her presence known!

Mark Gardner, the head of the maintenance for the courthouse, cleared most of the debris Tuesday and Wednesday. Barbara Bailey and I spent yesterday cleaning what was left and safely packing away the display items until we are able to reopen the room. According to Mark, this may be some time, as the entire original ceiling seems to be in bad disrepair. I will update you as we learn more. For now, we are looking forward to a fresh beginning with new drywall and paint. Also, Barbara and I have been discussing some ideas for upcoming displays. If you have any ideas or thoughts, please feel free to share them. I think this could actually lead to some exciting new displays.

With winter arriving sooner than expected, and snowfall already anticipated for Sunday and Monday, I just wanted to mention the Museum's weather policy. Simply, if Bullitt County public schools are closed due to weather, so is the Museum. If there is doubt about whether or not we are closed, just check local bulletins for Bullitt County school closings. If you feel that driving conditions are unsafe, please don't risk it.

The Museum is receiving several items of interest this week:

-Pat Conway will be dropping by a 16 x 20 photo of the Dingley Dell home and farm circa 1899. In the photo, Henry Linn is standing on the porch. For more about Henry Linn and the home, please read Charles Hartley's story here.

-Today David took in several old books, a nice stereoscope, and an antique tintype photo. The items are from the attic of the Trunnell House. Mary Curtis Taylor, now residing in Texas, once lived there, and graciously sends us things periodically. In September, she visited the Museum and left a handsome family bible, also from the Trunnell House, with us as well.

-Lastly, this past month David Strange created a DVD to celebrate the Museum's Ten Year Anniversary! It is currently being shown in our (open) display room. It is also available to view at our newly created YouTube channel at this link: https://youtu.be/5RcpeTiCnQ8 as well as on our website here.

As always, we are grateful to all of our volunteers for their time and energy. The volunteers are the heart of our Museum.

Thank you for being a friend of the Bullitt County History Museum.

I look forward to our exciting future together!
